Disassembling the Wii

(Note- page is a work in progress, I have a lot of images to upload and text to write yet, this isn't complete) This guide is color coded, for your benefit!

  • Blue rectangles indicate that you should pay attention to a certain area
  • Red Rectangles indicate that you need to take action in a certain area
  • White text, with a black outline is used to indicate screw types - there is a section on all the types of screws at the end of this page.
  • Green text, with a black outline is used to indicate other important things.
  • Removed screws are shown where possible, and highlighted with magenta to ensure you see them.

Before you begin

Tools you will need:

  • A trusty Philips head screwdriver
  • A long-necked tri-wing screwdriver (unless you want to hurt your case)

Things that are handy to have:

  • A small flathead screwdriver, for dealing with releasing the ribbon cable connectors and/or loosening connectors in general.
  • A fair bit of patience, some of this stuff is tightly fit and takes some wiggling to get out.
  • Attention to detail, so you don't miss a screw and wind up ripping something apart
  • the common sense not to destroy your equipment in the process

Dealing with the case: Uncovering the hidden screws

Ok, let's start at the top.

You should remove the top flaps from the wii, to make life easier (see blue for instructions, just have to push in the area next to the hinge (red), while pulling the hinge up)

Remove the 3 screws from the top panel here

The bottom panel has some hidden screws. Remove the battery holder, and the coverings indicated with red rectangles in this image

There are now 5 screws visible, remove all of them.

Removing the casing: Well, half of it.

Removing the DVD drive: Who needs it, anyway?

Removing the Shielding: So many screws!

Removing the Motherboard: At last, man's ultimate triumph over machine!

Addenum: Screw types

  • B1: Black screw, used exclusively on the outer casing of the Wii
  • B2: Black screw, slightly longer than B1, used on the outer casing of the Wii
  • S1: Silver Battery cover screw, attached to the battery holder
  • S2: Silver Philips head screw
  • T1: Silver Tri-wing screw

I don't have much more information about these screws at present, if anyone wants to look them up, feel free, and tell me your findings. I do plan to look them up eventually, and get better size information for screwdrivers, but it's not exactly a priority.

In conclusion
